Ahhh, the legendary Mwiba Lodge! This spectacular 10 room boutique lodge is the epitome of luxury travel. It has been built into the ancient granite rock kopjes overlooking a picturesque river, an important water source for the resident wildlife in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Five minutes after we had settled into our room, whilst the beautiful, and surprisingly ergonomical, claw foot tub filled, we heard a whoosh right outside. It was a mama and baby elephant who had come to play in the river, maybe 10 yards from our verandah.

A few minutes later and we were enjoying a sumptuous hot tub and watching the elephants bathing themselves through the huge window perfectly positioned above the tub. The outdoor shower also had views of the river and our playful ele friends, but we found it too difficult to extract ourselves from the tub to enjoy that first afternoon. We did the following day and it was just as fantastic as we had hoped, with great water pressure and an unending supply of hot water.

Our room also featured a fully stocked mini bar, a sitting area, and an eco air conditioning system over our massive and supremely comfortable bed, which worked surprisingly well.

Luxury Safari, Tanzania

When we managed to extract ourselves from the luxury of our suite, we were greeted by exceptionally attentive staff, all of whom knew our names and spoiled us with amazing fresh and creative dishes, beautiful cocktails, and exquisite deserts. We also managed to enjoy the spectacular views from the pool and jacuzzi, and a private dinner set up just for the two of us. Uhm, romantic much!?

The guides were no different from the rest of the staff – all incredibly knowledgable, fun, warm and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our game drives and especially our walk back to camp with an armed ranger as the sun set. We came across a whole herd of buffalo on foot, as well as elephant, giraffe, and various plains game. It was one of the biggest thrills of our trip, and something neither of us will ever forget!

Another real highlight was spending an afternoon with the local Hadzabe tribe, one of the last true hunter gatherers and one of the most authentic cultural experiences to be had anywhere in the world. We accompanied them as they searched for honey, made a fire and smoked out the bees. It was a very productive search, it turns out, and we all feasted on the raw honeycomb – an unbelievable treat!

Legendary Expeditions – Tanzania

We ended the evening around a fire, with a genuine exchange: yes, we arrived on the big metal bird in the sky! No, we did not build it ourselves!
So many unforgettable experiences here and we cannot wait to be back at Mwiba.
